Because the police don’t enforce the law…

Because the police don’t enforce the law doesn’t mean that you can avoid following the laws.  Most laws are for the purpose of safety and/or security and should be followed by anyone that wishes to stay in this country for any reason.  Many of the laws are listed in the Ten Commandments, which doesn’t mean that you can avoid them on religious grounds.

Use of turning signals is required for safety and are required for changing lanes as well as turning corners.  Turning signals or indicators, are not for the specific reason of allowing the police to give out tickets.

Stop lights are intended to keep traffic flowing while adding safety to high traffic areas.  In most communities, they are the next step after four-way stops.  In Fargo, they often skip the four-way stop and go directly to stop lights.  Stop lights should not be used specifically to allow parking lot traffic to get in and out, especially if there is another stop light within crawling distance from the parking lot light (Target/West Acres).  Stop lights should not be installed for the purpose of making traffic slow down in front of your business either.  Improperly timed stop lights are the cause of many people running red lights.  They don’t feel that they can cross town in a reasonable amount of time, so they feel the need to ‘risk it’.  I even see police cars sitting first in line at stop lights, watching three or four cars pass through an already red light.

Anti-lock brakes are only safe if they are working.  Either they will stop working as the vehicle gets older, or they will fail because they have other problems.  They were designed for aircraft landing at high speeds and young people are taught to use them without teaching them how to brake when they are out (pump your brakes if the anti-lock brakes are out).

Also, turn into the direction that you are sliding if you don’t have a four-wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicle.
Smoked headlight covers and smoked covers over all of your signal/brake lights are obstructing the proper use of all of these lights and dimming them inappropriately, causing safety concerns. Take those things off to save others lives if yours isn’t worth the time.
License plates also have problems. Smoked covers obstruct the view of them for the police, especially at night. Also, license plate frames that are covering any of the important information on your plates are illegal (even if it came from the dealership or your college). I believe in two license plates on every vehicle for the safety of the police officers, and so that they can see your plate from the front if they are staking out a drug house. Any state that allows only one plate is taking the police officers lives upon themselves.

These are all important safety rules while driving.  Know them, learn them, live them.

Look for additions to this post as I consider them.  Comment and correct any issues that you have with any of these.

I’m with you on the driving stuff! I take a heavily congested interstate to downtown every morning of the week. It’s incredibly frustrating to me the number of people who don’t use turn signals when changing lanes, nor do they take the cell phone from their ear long enough to look and see if there happens to be another car in the lane they want before changing lanes. Twice this week I almost got sideswiped for that very reason. This could turn into a rant, which I won’t do – I would just really like for people to reconsider using their turn signals! 🙂

Thank you for the comment! I do appreciate the opinions of others. Don’t feel as if you’re ranting, most people don’t seem to care, and they won’t read this post if they don’t, I’m sure. I’m planning to adding to this post soon, but I need to research a few things before adding to it, if you care to look at it again later on.
